Last week, I joined our Stockholm Christmas Traditions &amp; Treats Tour, and it became clear that Swedish Christmas is less about grandeur and more about warmth, tradition, and light in the darkest time of year.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Stortorget: Where Christmas comes alive<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We started at Stortorget, the main square in Gamla Stan, transformed into Stockholm\u2019s most iconic Christmas market for the season. Each one came with its own story and significance:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Roasted almonds \u2013 sweet, warm, and also impossible to resist; the smell alone has become synonymous with Swedish Christmas markets.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Saffron buns (<em>lussekatter<\/em>) \u2013 golden, slightly sweet, and shaped like curled cats or the letter S. These aren\u2019t just pastries; they\u2019re tied to the celebration of St. Lucia on December 13th, one of Sweden\u2019s most cherished traditions. They originated in the Dalarna region as simple toys carved\u00a0 by woodworkers during long winter nights. Today, they\u2019ve become an enduring symbol of Swedish craft and heritage.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Santa Lucia<\/strong> \u2013 On December 13th, Sweden celebrates one of its most beloved traditions: Lucia. A young woman dressed in white with a crown of candles leads processions through schools, workplaces, and churches, singing traditional songs. This celebration marks the beginning of the Christmas season and represents light breaking through the darkest time of year. The saffron buns (<em>lussekatter<\/em>) we tasted earlier are baked specifically for this day, their golden color echoing the candlelight of Lucia&#8217;s crown.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Yule Goat (<strong><em>julbock<\/em><\/strong>) \u2013 one of the most curious symbols we encountered. These straw goats, ranging from tiny ornaments to massive sculptures, have roots in ancient pagan traditions. Originally connected to Thor and the Norse celebration of winter solstice, the goat was believed to bring gifts. Today, the Julbock remains a beloved Christmas decoration, and cities across Sweden compete to build giant versions \u2014 though they&#8217;re sometimes mysteriously set on fire, adding an element of mischief to the tradition.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Advent candles (<strong><em>julljusstakar<\/em><\/strong>) \u2013 spotted in shop windows and homes throughout the city, these candlesticks aren&#8217;t just decoration. Traditionally made with four candles, one is lit each Sunday leading up to Christmas. It&#8217;s a way of counting down, of marking time, and of bringing more light into the home as the days grow shorter. The ritual of lighting each candle becomes a quiet moment of anticipation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>A Celebration of Light in the Darkness<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What struck me most about this tour wasn&#8217;t just the treats or the charming markets \u2014 it was the underlying theme of light. In a place where December days last only a few hours, Christmas becomes a collective act of defiance against the dark. Candles everywhere. Lights in every window. The Lucia procession. The glowing market stalls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It&#8217;s as if the entire country agrees: we will not let the darkness win. We will gather, we will light candles, we will eat together, and we will create warmth.
