The places we recommend are our genuine suggestions and we hope you enjoy them as much as we did when we visited Uppsala!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Travel to Uppsala<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To make it to Uppsala on a regular day, it can take up to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Stockholm Arlanda Airport \u2013 Uppsala: <strong>18 minutes<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Stockholm City (T-centralen) \u2013 Uppsala: <strong>60 minutes&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here are a few options you can take to travel to Uppsala:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>1. Pendeltag 40 \u2013 direction Uppsala C<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/sl.se\/en\/in-english\/fares--tickets\/smart-phone-ticket-app\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Download the SL app<\/a> to find the most accurate, up-to-date, information on public transportation options in Stockholm. Here are a few fika places we recommend if you want to grab some coffee and something sweet near Uppsala\u2019s train station:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.stationen.se\/cafe-rom\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cafe Rome<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/kafferummet_storken\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kafferummet Storken<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/shop.landings.se\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Landings Konditori<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.guntherska.se\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Guntherska<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unofikabutik.se\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Uno fika<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These coffee shops are all in the direction of the next stops, so feel free to have a quick break at any of them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Uppsala University Library<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Inside Uppsala University&#8217;s main library, Carolina Rediviva, visitors can see some of Sweden&#8217;s most treasured historic artifacts and rare manuscripts, including the world-famous Codex Argenteus, also called the Silver Bible, which features gold and silver ink on purple vellum and is the most complete surviving document in Gothic language.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The library also displays the Carta Marina, a map from 1539 that stands among the earliest accurate depictions of Scandinavia, as well as Bure\u2019s monumental 1626 map of the Nordic region, showcasing Sweden\u2019s early cartographic achievements. Exhibitions feature the evolution of writing, the history of book printing, unique sketches from children\u2019s author Elsa Beskow\u2019s archive, and original architectural drawings of the University House.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Castle and Botanical Gardens<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Take the chance to walk up to <a href=\"https:\/\/destinationuppsala.se\/en\/activities\/uppsala-castle\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Uppsala\u2019s Castle<\/a> as you cross the bridge to this part of town (which looks very much like the Swedish version of Amsterdam\u2019s canals).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Uppsala Castle lies at the top of a hill which stands beside a deep mud cliff stretching to the Earth\u2019s bottom crust layer. The Castle\u2019s history began in 1549, intended to be the residence of newly-established Swedish King Gustav Vasa. Since then, it was destroyed in a big fire and then reconstructed to its current state in 1740. Inside the Castle, you can visit an Art Museum as well as the <a href=\"https:\/\/destinationuppsala.se\/en\/activities\/vasaborgen\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Vasaborgen<\/a>, a spooky museum of 16th century ruins from the original Uppsala castle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Next, you can cross the road behind the Castle and walk right into the <a href=\"https:\/\/destinationuppsala.se\/en\/activities\/the-botanical-garden\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Botanical Gardens<\/a>. These beautiful gardens are something of a wonder and definitely worth the visit! They are home to also some Uppsala University research facilities as well as a few botanical museum sites, such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/destinationuppsala.se\/en\/activities\/the-tropical-greenhouse\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tropical Greenhouse<\/a>, fun for people of all ages. A 100-yr-old coffee shop named <a href=\"https:\/\/www.trillermat.se\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cafe Victoria<\/a> lies on the Botanical Gardens\u2019 grounds but it is only open during the summer season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Explore the Gardens for as long as you like but if you start getting hungry, make your way back towards the Castle and walk down to the main shopping streets, Svartb\u00e4cksgatan or Dragarbrunnsgatan, where you will find plenty of restaurants to have lunch at. Some cute little shops you can check out around <a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/3Zn5GisCTkoJhyFZ7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Stadsbibliotek<\/a> include <a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/QH5ZnhMBMccSuyDM7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The English Bookshop<\/a> and the tea shop, <a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/sgswa1XwtnBT3VjB7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Teh\u00f6rnan<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Lunch<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our top recommendations:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Swedish:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/g.page\/Feskarnsaluhallen?share\">Saluhallen<\/a>: food market with a variety of Swedish food options, including fish dishes; if the weather is nice, the terrace by the water is super enjoyable<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Vegan:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/kko3WH9oVgSqrvTbA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Vegano\u2019s<\/a>: tiny space (don\u2019t go there with a stroller or a big group of people) but excellent taste of vegan food<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/g.page\/curry-buddies---city-food-truck?share\">Curry Buddies city food truck<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/2RWgvfv6Yh6Y2sDc8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Miss Voon<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/homek7xrHEWG5KNb8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">L\u00e9gume \u2013 Lunchrestaurang Uppsala<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Asian:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/P9atGZxhcVDgREj4A\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Asia Grill<\/a>: they have a buffet option and lots of space, so if you are visiting with a big group, they can probably fit you in<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/QxgKmvF7nUYf8REv7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">An Nam<\/a>: Vietnamese food<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Linnaeus\u2019 house and garden (open May to September only)<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you finished having lunch in the area of the restaurants we suggested above, you will be close by our next recommended stop \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/destinationuppsala.se\/en\/activities\/linnaeus-hammarby\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Linnaeus\u2019 house<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/destinationuppsala.se\/en\/activities\/the-linnaeus-garden\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">gardens<\/a>. Unfortunately, the grounds are only open from May to September. If you happen to visit Uppsala in the Fall or Winter, go ahead and skip this stop and make your way directly to the Uppsala Cathedral nearby.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Otherwise, if you\u2019re lucky to visit during the summer season, check out the summer home where Linnaeus spent most of his time, one of Sweden\u2019s best-preserved 18th century farms, and also the home to the world\u2019s largest living collection of Linnaean plants. <a href=\"https:\/\/destinationuppsala.se\/en\/guides\/discover-the-uppsala-of-carl-linnaeus\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">In Linnaeus\u2019 gardens<\/a>, you will find close to 1300 species of plants and flowers which were cultivated by Linnaeus himself, according to his own classification system (taxonomy).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Close by, if you fancy a cake or two, we recommend <a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/34xFtcs7onUQSfRo9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cafe Linne<\/a>, a lovely little place for local traditional pastries and cakes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Uppsala Cathedral<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/destinationuppsala.se\/en\/activities\/uppsala-cathedral\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Uppsala Cathedra<\/a>l is right near the centre of Uppsala, on the other side of the main canal. It stands tall and glorious in its stature, one of the oldest and tallest religious buildings in all of Scandinavia. The cathedral was built in the Gothic style, reconstructed and altered several times over many centuries. You can read more about the cathedral\u2019s interesting architecture and history at the entrance to the church, across from the gift shop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When you enter the main hall of the cathedral, make your way to the end of the hall and there you will find the tomb of Gustav Vasa, the first king of modern-day Sweden. All around his burial site, you will find paintings depicting snapshots of his life. You can always visit the cathedral first thing when you arrive, however, at 15:00 they have a daily tour free of charge. They explain the most important things in English and is quite worth it.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For an afternoon fika, we suggest you partake in this Swedish tradition of sitting down for coffee and a sweet pastry at the Cathedral\u2019s coffee shop, <a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/ypvjwgcQyUEecdX47\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Katedralkaf\u00e9et<\/a>. They have delicious carrot cake as well as the conventional cinnamon buns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Upplands Museet<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then, for one last museum run, we recommend checking out the nice-to-visit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.upplandsmuseet.se\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Upplands Musee<\/a>t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Only a 2 min walk from the Cathedral, you will find this museum to be full with insights about the history of Uppsala, the Vikings, and the religious foundations of the Uppsala Cathedral. The museum\u2019s exhibits are all written\/displayed in Swedish but find the handheld printed English versions of the text on a wooden stand as you step into each floor of the museum. Incredibly interactive and informative, <a href=\"https:\/\/destinationuppsala.se\/en\/activities\/gamla-uppsala-museum\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Upplands Museet<\/a> is an excellent place to learn more about the history and cultural significance of the Vikings and the found Upplands runestones. You can even write your own runic inscription on an interactive monitor at the museum\u2019s exhibit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Walk along <a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/maps\/Z6JxzgcrFnbRTSuX7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Stadstr\u00e4dg\u00e5rden<\/a><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you have some time left or want to skip one of the other stops for more fresh air, the city\u2019s great park is our best nature trail suggestion. Stadstr\u00e4dg\u00e5rden is lovely to walk through, beautiful views of the canal, especially during the Autumn season, with falling leaves flying with the wind in shades of yellow and red, makes this place a very special romantic setting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Return to Stockholm for dinner<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Either choose another of the spots we recommended previously or make your way back to Stockholm before nighttime to have dinner back in town.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hope you had a fun and informative time reading this blogpost.
