Stockholm unfolds differently when you know how to read its surfaces: the curve of a façade, the way natural light shapes a room, and the design choices behind everyday beauty.

From Östermalm to Norrmalm, your Local Xpert traces the city's design story through 19th-century architecture, Swedish Grace, food culture, and creative influences ranging from Carl Milles and Hanna Pauli to Svenskt Tenn and IKEA.

Xperience Highlights

Step into Östermalm's world of food, fashion, and design

Walk through the borough where Swedish fashion and design trends are born. At Östermalm Saluhall, ranked the 7th best food hall in the world, your Local Xpert unveils everything from architectural wonders to an 1834 bistro, introducing you to traditional Swedish food culture. Down Nybrogatan, pass an antiquities shop, a luxury goods auction house, and a 1920s vintage movie theatre turned chic Italian restaurant before ending at Nordiska Galleriet, a staple of modern Scandinavian design.

Admire the façade of the Royal Dramatic Theatre

An Art Nouveau façade from the 20th century, this opulent marble theatre is rich with myths and allegories our Local Xperts can't wait to unravel. Legacies of Swedish stars like Greta Garbo and Ingrid Bergman still seem to cling to its stages.

Discover Sweden's green urban planning in Kungsträdgården

King's garden invites you to pause and observe how the Scandinavian urban landscape sits in harmony with nature. We'll stroll through what was once a royal green space as we unearth Swedish architectural influences from Gothic to modern design.

Trace Stockholm's interior design story inside Hallwyl Museum

Your Local Xpert peels back the layers of Hallwylska Museet, a 19th-century private palace where art, interiors, and aristocratic life have been preserved in remarkable detail. Here, Stockholm's design story moves from streets and public spaces into the private rooms of the city's elite.

Trace Swedish design from streets to interiors

9:50 or 13:50: Meet at Svampen

We'll meet under the rain cover that looks like a mushroom. Your Local Xpert will be easy to spot in a brick orange "Xperience Stockholm" hat and name tag.

Danelius House (Daneliuska huset)

Leaving the mushroom behind, we'll guide you to Danelius House, the architectural crown jewel of Stureplan. Called The Flatiron building, this Belle Époque masterpiece features an intricately carved stone façade standing as a monument to late 19th-century luxury. Your Local Xpert will reveal why these historic walls are a striking contradiction of Stockholm high society and rebel glamour. We'll also pass Berns Hotel, a historical boutique hotel that adds to Stureplan's layered story.

Östermalm Saluhall (Admission included)

Let the flavours of Stockholm's fields, coasts, and forests come into focus as we explore Swedish food culture inside this 20th-century architectural marvel.

Östermalm Design District

Next, we'll stroll through the elegant streets of Östermalm, where Swedish fashion, interiors, and design sensibility have long taken shape. From Nybrogatan to Strandvägen, your Local Xpert will connect Swedish minimalism, antique craft, and contemporary design through household names like Nordiska Galleriet and Svenskt Tenn, with time to step inside each shop and browse.

Royal Dramatic Theatre (Kungliga Dramatiska Teatern)

A masterpiece of 20th-century Art Nouveau, this opulent Ekeberg marble theatre is considered one of Stockholm's most beautiful and beloved buildings. Your Local Xpert will uncover the secrets behind its sculptural reliefs, gilded ceilings, and grand auditorium where stars like Greta Garbo and Ingrid Bergman graced its stages before Hollywood came calling.

Kungsträdgården

We continue our stroll, showing how King's garden evolved from a royal pleasure garden into a green space loved by visitors and locals. We'll reflect on how the Scandinavian urban landscape blurs the line between outdoors and indoors by relying on earthy textures, interior greenery, and sustainable design. As we pass by the Royal Swedish Opera and St. Jacob's Church, you'll see how the Gothic, Baroque and modern periods influenced Swedish architecture.

13:00 or 17:00: Hallwyl Museum (Admission included)

Frozen in time, the Hallwylska Museet provides an intimate look at the art collection of Count and Countess Walther and Wilhelmina von Hallwyl. Through this 19th-century private palace, we'll get a rare glimpse into the lives of Stockholm's elite. We'll end here, leaving you with enough time to wander through the museum at your own pace.

Olesia was deeply knowledgeable and warm. She took us through key design features and buildings from the 1800s onwards.

We visited some beautiful design shops, which were places to go back to with more time. She shared the history of Stockholm and Sweden that provided great context for all that we saw. Would highly recommend the tour if you're interested in architecture, design and history.

Karen, France Stockholm Architecture & Design

I particularly enjoyed having time to look around some beautiful design shops.

I had such a good time on my tour. Ana was really easy to chat to and so knowledgeable about Stockholm. The route was very interesting, and she helped me plan the rest of my trip, which was brilliant. Thank you!

Good to Know

What to bring

Bring comfortable walking shoes, easy layers, and nowhere urgent to be. Our experience runs in the sun or clouds, so you may also find these valuable: sunscreen, sunglasses, hat, refillable water bottle, and umbrella, because you never know what Nordic summer might serve.

Activities to plan for

This is a low-intensity experience with mostly flat paths, plenty of stops, and moments to sit along the way. That said, it is still a roughly 3-hour excursion, so come prepared for a healthy dose of walking.
