Stockholm archipelago experience with a Local Xpert

Xperience Highlights

Sail on a small cruise ship, summer breeze in your hair

Leave the crowds of the city centre by steamship and watch Stockholm soften into islands, pine trees, painted houses, and Baltic seawater as Vaxholm comes into view, one hour away from the city.

Trace the stories that once guarded Vaxholm Fortress

Step inside a 16th-century fortress that protected Stockholm from Baltic invasion for 500 years. Your Local Xpert brings its history to life through soldiers' stories, hidden bunkers, and the strategic geography that made Vaxholm the key to Stockholm's defense line.

Experience a coastal summer lunch and fika

Pause for a break by the water, with time for lunch and fika at a Swedish Midsummer café, including traditional pastries and smooth Swedish coffee. If you'd rather bring your own picnic basket or simple lunch spread, that's welcome too.

Uncover lesser-know stops

No two trips are ever the same. Whether we're meandering through Vaxholm's fisherman streets or pausing at Town Hall, parts of the day depend on the group, the weather, and what your Local Xpert thinks you shouldn't miss. We leave room for blissfully unplanned moments.

Experience the Stockholm archipelago, the slow way

Meeting point

National Museum — 2 Södra Blasieholmshamnen, Stockholm, Stockholms län SE 111 48

9:45: Meet at the National Museum

We'll meet under the metallic sculpture in front of the National Museum. Your Local Xpert will be easy to spot in a brick-orange "Xperience Stockholm" hat and name tag.

10:00: Cruise to Vaxholm

We'll set off on a steamship from Stockholm city centre and begin our one-hour slow cruise towards the coastal town of Vaxholm.

Vaxholm local favourites

Meander through town as your Local Xpert unearths gems like old fishermen's homes, local artisan shops, and City Hall, a 100-year-old building overlooking the main square, Rådhustorget.

Lunch and fika by the sea

We'll stop by a cosy Swedish Midsummer café where you can settle into fika by the sea. Picnic baskets are welcome too. With homemade cakes, coffee, and Swedish classics like herring, shrimp sandwiches, or meatballs, you'll get a taste of the Swedish ritual of slowing down, reconnecting, and recharging.

Vaxholm Beach and Baltic Sea

We continue our adventure, pausing by the half-buried, curving steel rails of the old artillery battery tracks as we make our way to the beach. Don't resist the temptation to dip your toes, and maybe even your body, into the brackish waters of the Baltic.

Taxi boat to Vaxholm Fortress and Museum

Enjoy the summer breeze as we take a short ride to Vaxholm Fortress. We begin at this 16th-century fort, where military battalions scouted enemies for centuries. Step into the museum for stories of espionage, Sweden's infamous spies, and the legacy of the Ytterby Mine. From there, we'll climb the main tower for sweeping views over the archipelago.

16:00: Ferry ride back to Stockholm

Notice the light change on the water as you enjoy a final breezy cruise through the archipelago back to the city. We'll return to Stockholm, sea air still clinging to your hair and a clearer sense of why summer island culture means so much to locals.

Is this Xperience right for you?

This experience is a lovely fit for Stockholm first-timers seeking a slower day by the water, couples looking to escape the city buzz, and families who want Swedish history, seaside traditions, and fresh air without a rushed schedule. We balance the classics with historical and cultural surprises, shaped by the group, the weather, and what your team knows is worth the detour.

Even my 17-year-old enjoyed the tour, and that age is a tough crowd to please.

Frankie is an amazing guide with a wealth of knowledge. She is also super personable and makes learning fun. I highly recommend them because they allow the group to personalise the tour, spending more or less time where the group wants to, and the tour does not feel rushed like with a lot of companies. Keep up the great work!!

The somewhat hidden café in Vaxholm was a little insider tip, and we really enjoyed it there.

All of Loredana's information about Sweden and Stockholm was very interesting, even though she wasn't Swedish herself. She really had a lot of know-how and insider knowledge about Stockholm. We also met nice people on the tour and really enjoyed the trip.

Melina, Germany Vaxholm: Stockholm Archipelago

Great landscape, historic places, a castle, and an excellent and extremely helpful guide.

It was a very pleasant excursion to the Archipelago of Stockholm. Our guide explained to us the historical background of the places we visited.

Plan my private tour

The tour was intimate, which created a relaxed and personal atmosphere that we really appreciated.

What made it truly special was our guide, Frankie. From the moment we met, she made us feel welcome and taken care of. She took the time to connect with each of us, and it never felt rushed or overly scripted. Her knowledge and warmth made the experience feel less like a tour and more like spending time with a local friend who genuinely wanted us to have a great time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this Xperience suitable for children?

Yes. Children of all ages have joined our Vaxholm experience, and the route is stroller accessible. When booking, let us know your children's ages and whether you'll be bringing a stroller so your Local Xpert can plan with your crew in mind.

How physically demanding is the day?

This is a low-intensity experience with mostly flat paths, plenty of stops, and moments to sit along the way. That said, it is still a full-day excursion, so comfortable walking shoes are your friend.

What happens if the weather is bad?

We keep an eye on the forecast before your experience and will contact you by WhatsApp or email if the weather looks like it may affect the day. When possible, we'll offer the option to move to a sunnier date. Stockholm summer usually gives us something workable, so most experiences go ahead in sun, clouds, or a little Nordic moodiness.

What is your cancellation policy?

Cancel more than 3 hours before your experience starts and receive a 100% refund, no questions asked. If you booked with a promo code, we're happy to help you reschedule instead.

Can I book this as a private tour?

Yes. If you'd like the day to yourselves, contact a Local Xpert to plan a Vaxholm experience for your group, pace, interests, and preferred language.

What language will the Xperience be in?

You can choose your preferred language by choosing or requesting your guide. All Vaxholm Local Xperts speak English. Loredana also speaks Italian, Frankie speaks Portuguese, Raquel speaks Spanish, and Adam speaks German. Let us know your language preference when booking so we can match you thoughtfully.
