Stockholm: The Silicon Valley of Europe

When people think of entrepreneurship and innovation, Silicon Valley often comes to mind first. Sweden, and Stockholm in particular, is rarely the immediate association. Yet, this perception overlooks one of Europe’s most dynamic startup ecosystems.

Stockholm has produced globally recognised companies such as Ericsson, Spotify, Klarna, and Lovable, but its strength lies beyond a few famous unicorns (companies valued at over 1 billion USD) . The city combines research institutions, public funding, impact-driven incubators and a culture of trust and collaboration that helps ideas flourish into real businesses. The Swedish Innovations & Entrepreneurship Xperience by XperienceSthlm offers a closer look at this ecosystem and takes visitors through the places where research, entrepreneurship and sustainability meet.

This Xperience is highly-customizable, depending on the interests and expertise of our travelers. It can be adapted to curious families who are considering sending their children to study at Stockholm’s universities, or to industry professionals like engineering teams looking to understand how innovation works in Sweden, or even international executive leaders who are interested in building business ties within the Swedish start-up and scale-up networks.

In this case, the tour I went on was designed by our team of Local Xperts for a visiting class of university students from the United States. They were looking to understand how Stockholm’s institutions and start-ups promote innovation and ground-breaking technology development, alongside enforcing or being helped by Sweden’s welfare system, by taking a first-hand, on-site, look where most don’t even gain access to.

From Laboratory to Market Launch

The tour began at Greenhouse Labs at KTH Royal Institute of Technology, an environment where early-stage startups in chemistry and green tech receive support and develop their ideas. It provided a clear picture of how research can move from the laboratory toward the commercial application.

A highlight was meeting Reselo, a sustainability start-up that developed a fossil-free rubber alternative from birch bark waste. Founders Josefin Larsson and Thomas Baumgarten explained how a research discovery can become a company: identifying a market need, refining the material, building partnerships, and securing support along the way. Their story showed that innovation is rarely a sudden breakthrough. It is an ongoing process shaped by research, persistence and the right institutional support.

Purpose-Driven Entrepreneurship

After a short walk through the city, we visited Norrsken, one of Stockholm’s leading impact hubs. The visit offered insight into a working culture that is built around purpose and impact. For instance, Giulia Gaudenzi, co-founder of Flexpenser AB, presented the company’s micro-valve technology, which helps reduce waste and spoilage in liquid products and inspired us with her journey on trying to scale deep tech in Sweden and beyond.

Why Stockholm Works

Throughout the morning, one question kept returning: why does Stockholm produce so many innovative companies? The answer is not a single factor, but a combination of conditions.

Sweden’s welfare state, accessible education, public research funding, and grant systems lower some of the barriers to experimentation. At the same time, a high-trust society and close connections between universities, industry, investors, and startups create an environment where ideas can be tested and developed. Each stop along the tour highlighted how these conditions shape the flourishing entrepreneurial landscape in Stockholm.

A Different View of Innovation

The Swedish Innovation and Entrepreneurship Xperience showed that Stockholm’s entrepreneurial spirit is not only about established success stories. It is about the infrastructure that allows new ideas to emerge: laboratories, incubators, impact hubs, public institutions and the people behind the ideas.

For anyone interested in founding a company, or simply curious about how innovation takes shape in practice, Stockholm offers an ecosystem worth exploring up close.
